After leaving Susie and Kevin's we had a couple of days to kill until our ferry back to the North Island. We spent the first night at Pelorous Bridge, a wonderful DOC campground set next to a lovely, cool river and lots of big trees.

The campground

Lou with Pelorous Bridge in the background. The water was chilly, but the day was just hot enough to entice us into the water.
We left Pelorous to spend the night before our ferry at Aussie Bay, a cute little campground close to Picton in the Marlborough Sounds. Interestingly this was the first place we camped on arriving in the South Island and it would be our last as well.

The ferocious sandflies kept us inside most of the afternoon, playing cards. Thanks Susie for teaching us a new game!

A family portrait at Aussie Bay. Farewell South Island!

Funny story about this picture. We were driving north on the main highway, when we came upon this guy stopping all traffic before a bridge. We had been sitting there for about ten minutes wondering what kind of wide load warranted so much disruption to the traffic flow, when suddenly a massive truck appeared carrying a full-sized army tank. Ah ha! Probably New Zealand's only tank had just driven by, and of course we forgot to take a picture.
