Follow the Signs

You'll never go too far when driving on New Zealand's motorways without coming across a brown sign directing you to something over the hill. This something may be a scenic reserve, an old mission house, church, historic Maori site or a stone commemorating a past event. Either way, they're almost always interesting. So while we headed south on our way to our next wwofing host we stopped to check out one of these places. After a somewhat confusing drive thru the city of Whangarei we came to our destination: Whangarei Falls.

The River Trail

The Bridge near the base of the Falls

The area was traditionally an important freshwater eel fishing site for the Maori. While the falls were beautiful, it was the the forest track along the river that we enjoyed the most. We only spent an hour or so here but its a great example of what happens when you follow those little signs in life...
