We were a little sad to leave the redwoods, but our attention was immediately recaptured by the wild Oregon coast. We couldn't help being reminded of New Zealand, with the rocky outcroppings and steely ocean waters shrouded in heavy fog.
We spent two nights on the coast, the first at a great campground at the base of Humbug Mountain, and the second at a site that offered this great walk through mossy forest to reach the beach:
On our way north, we stopped to see the Oregon Dunes, a wholly unexpected sight in the midst of so much greenery. This is the longest stretch of coastal dunes in the country!
We did a hike out to the water, starting in the conifers, dropping down into bare dunes and then crossing this in between land featuring both.
These dunes are habitat to a good deal of wildlife, particularly birds who nest in the sand.
It was really warm out there in the bright sun

We also stopped at the big aquarium in Newport for a few hours. Cool stuff.
